Boxes and Reconstructions

Lucas Samaras: Boxes and Reconstructions brings together two bodies of work—box sculptures created from the 1960s through the 1980s and previously unseen fabric paintings from his Reconstructions series of 1979—on view at Pace’s 540 West 25th Street gallery from November 6, 2026 through January 23, 2027. The boxes are mixed-media assemblages (the series comprises almost three hundred works) in which Samaras used materials such as liquid aluminum and plaster to attach photographs, ephemera, and found objects to structures with compartments, drawers, and interior spaces. The Reconstructions are hand-sewn fabric works from the artist’s personal collection, shown here for the first time, that combine patterns, colors, textures, and shapes and reference textiles from his youth while engaging themes of selfhood and identity.
