The Heroes 1965–66
Georg Baselitz
Oct 13 - Dec 18 · Tue–Sat, 10am–6pm
37 Dover Street, London W1S 4NJ
The exhibition presents Georg Baselitz’s Hero paintings from 1965–66, bringing together key works from that series with loans from institutions including Tate, Berlinische Galerie, Museum Frieder Burda and Museum Küppersmühle Duisburg, alongside the artist’s family holdings and private collections; it is the first UK exhibition devoted exclusively to this body of work. Created when Baselitz was 27, the series comprises approximately 60 paintings, 130 drawings and 38 prints and centres on monumental, ambiguous figures in ravaged landscapes—figures shown barefoot and dressed in rags or torn military uniforms—addressing post‑war German society and the artist’s position within it.
