Reading the Waves

Sandra Vásquez de la Horra

Sep 10 - Oct 29 · Tue–Sat, 10am–6pm

521 West 21st Street, New York, NY 10011

Reading the Waves is an exhibition of new work by Sandra Vásquez de la Horra that centers on drawing and paper sculptures treated with beeswax, including accordion-like leporellos and suspended structures. The works draw on spiritual mythologies, folklore, religious iconographies, Latin American popular imagery, and indigenous healing practices to examine the interconnectedness of the human body, landscape, and water; the main gallery includes a circular, chapel-like installation of monumental drawings oriented by the cardinal points and the sun. Large-scale triptychs depict Olokun and marine animals, an upstairs suspended leporello features Yemanyá, and other works address plants, Pacha-Mama, and the essentialness of water.
